l The Feast l
Apr 5_2012 Chapter 27
Dear Saints,
Today we prayerfully continue our Feast in Leviticus 27. This is the laws covering the monetary value of Vows. “Verses 1-13 Zeal for the service of God disposed the Israelites, on some occasions, to dedicate themselves or their children to the service of the Lord, in his house for life. Some persons who thus dedicated themselves might be employed as assistants; in general they were to be redeemed for a value. It is good to be zealously affected and liberally disposed for the Lord's service; but the matter should be well weighed, and prudence should direct as to what we do; else rash vows and hesitation in doing them will dishonour God, and trouble our own minds.” Leviticus 27:1-13, Matthew Henry Commentary Concise. Now with that being said we see that one should consider carefully when making a vow. God values your word. The thing that caught my eye here was how fair God is when setting the price for these vows. “1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, If anyone makes a special vow to the Lord involving the valuation of persons, 3 then the valuation of a male from twenty years old up to sixty years old shall be fifty shekels of silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 If the person is a female, the valuation shall be thirty shekels. 5 If the person is from five years old up to twenty years old, the valuation shall be for a male twenty shekels, and for a female ten shekels. 6 If the person is from a month old up to five years old, the valuation shall be for a male five shekels of silver, and for a female the valuation shall be three shekels of silver. 7 And if the person is sixty years old or over, then the valuation for a male shall be fifteen shekels, and for a female ten shekels. 8 And if someone is too poor to pay the valuation, then he shall be made to stand before the priest, and the priest shall value him; the priest shall value him according to what the vower can afford.” Leviticus 27:1 - 8 ESV. Saints this reminds me of everyday life here in the Stanford home. When my children were young or now doing anything with ny grandchildren that I had to pay for I looked (and still do) at the discounts. How much for the baby, the student, adult and senior pricing. I find it very interesting that God already had discounts for vows. It makes me think about a story that a pastor shared in a Sunday morning service. I need to tell it like I remember it; “At the end of a service an evangelist had an alter call. There were three people who came forward to accept Jesus. A man in his mid thirties, a woman in her mid sixties and a 12 year old child. After the service an Elder commented to the Evangelist well we got two and a half converts today. The evangelist seemed surprised and he told the elder that in his eye’s he got one and three quarters. If you look at the ages the man had about 50% of his adult life left to serve God. The elderly woman about 25% and the Child had 100% of his working life to serve God. Therefore God called forward 1.75% working lives into service that day.” Dennis Davenport, Pastor. I finally understood the parable of the vineyard workers.; “10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, 12 saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ 13 But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?14 Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last.”” Matthew 20:10 - 16. Thus we finish the Book of Leviticus, and move forward to the New Testament Feast. Just because it’s Easter it is a great time to share God’s Love.; “For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.” 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 ESV.
