Hearing from God? – 2 Kings 4

Jan 20, 2013 - 2 Kings 4

Dear  Saints,

Today we are prayerfully reading, 2 Kings 4.  In this chapter we see faith in God working in several instances.  None of them simple or small just acts of faith working for the faithful.  I really want this kind of faith!  Where does it come from?  Let’s look at the last example in this chapter; “42 A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And Elisha said, “Give to the men that they may eat.” 43 But his servant said, “How can I set this before a hundred men?” So he repeated, “Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the Lord, ‘They shall eat and have some left.’” 44 So he set it before them. And they ate and had some left, according to the word of the Lord.” 2 Kings 4:42-44, English Standard Version (ESV).   What kind of faith is at work when a man with twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain, has to feed a hundred men with leftovers?  It is the faith of the servant with the bread and Elisha the prophet of God.  Does this mean they wished really hard together that God would fulfill the word of the prophet?   No, Elisha believes God because he saw God showing miracles through Elijah and himself in the past.  Elisha simply believed God because he had seen God coming through in every circumstance.  He has never heard of God failing to be true to His Word. Does the man with the bread have some kind of super faith that the 20 loaves of barley should feed 100 men with leftovers?  No he simply heard that God’s words to Elisha’s are true.  All right so what do I have to do to have this kind of faith in God?  The truth comes in hearing and knowing whom you are hearing from.  “16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:15-17 ESV.  Just hearing is only the first step, it is necessary that we hear from the Word of God.  In doing so we believe that the bible we are reading is the true Word of God.  This is what the Feast is about, hearing every word of God.  Believing that God’s words are true, sharing the gospel and keeping the first thing first. That is salvation through the blood of our Lord Jesus.  It starts with Jesus giving you, the Saints his Word and you reading and believing God’s word.  That is where true faith is going to come from.  When you receive this faith you will let your light shine as a testament to God’s love.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV.
